About the NELMSC Hall of Fame

The New England Local Masters Swimming Committee (NELMSC) is a volunteer-run, nonprofit subordinate of USMS that serves as the regional governing body for USMS-registered clubs, workout groups, coaches, and swimmers in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The NELMSC Board of Directors founded the Hall of Fame in 2010 to recognize outstanding members of the New England LMSC via annual HOF inductions in three categories:

  • Pool Performance. The Pool Performance category recognizes members based on outstanding swimming accomplishments achieved while a member of the New England LMSC.

  • Open Water/Long Distance. The Open Water/Long Distance category recognizes members based on outstanding long distance or open water swimming accomplishments achieved while a member of the New England LMSC and/or provided opportunities for so many of our open water swimmers in New England.

  • Contributor. The Contributor category recognizes members who have contributed significant time and effort to the formation, development, and organization of their club or New England LMSC and/or whose valuable contributions over several years led to the continued success of their club or the New England LMSC.

The 2024 NELMSC Awards and Hall of Fame Celebration will take place on Sunday, September 29th at J. Anthonys Italian Grill in Auburn, MA.  More details can be found at the Hall of Fame Celebration Page.

Selection Criteria

  • Pool Performance: The Pool Performance category is based strictly on a point system.  Accomplishments considered and scored are:

    • USMS All American (the fastest time in an event/age group in Short Course Yards, Long Course Meters or Short Course Meters) – 7 points for each All American earned. Tabulations are updated each year.

    • NE LMSC All Time Top 3 Performers (Short Course Yards, Long Course Meters and Short Course Meters)- 5 points for 1st place, 3 points for 2nd place and 1 point for 3rd place.  Tabulations are updated each year.

Swimmers with the highest total points (natural break) are the inductees. 

  • Open Water/Long Distance: The Open Water/Long Distance subcommittee researched potential candidates (web search, newsletters, recommendations, USMS Long Distance All American) and came up with a list of 14 people. All information was documented on a spreadsheet and sent to each HOF committee member to rank their top 7. A point system was used (1st = 15 points, 2nd = 13 points … 7th = 8 points). Scores were tallied and those with the most points (natural break) are the inductees.

  • Contributor: The Contributor category is based on research (web search, newsletters, newspaper articles, interviews, recommendations) with all information documented on a spreadsheet. The 2019 class was from the early 1970’s through 1984. The members inducted were the “Trailblazers,” those who were responsible for the formation of the first three major clubs in the NE LMSC (New England Masters, Vermont Masters & Maine Masters). The 2020 class was from 1985 through 2005. The list of potential nominees for the 2024 class is through the present and the list contained 13 people. The Committee was asked to rank their top 7 (1st = 15 points, 2nd = 13 points, ….7 = 8 points). Scores were tallied and those with the most points (natural break) are the inductees.
